Diorio Collection 1979 St. Anthony's Fire Floral Paperweight
We are proud to offer this 1979 "St. Anthony's Fire Floral Paperweight" with six blossoms and buds on a rich turquoise background. This unique piece from the Diorio Collection measures 2 3/4" in diameter.

Stankard created this paperweight to call attention to a serious illness suffered by many of the townspeople of Pont Saint Esprit, France, on August 15, 1151. The cause was poisoning from a fungus (ergot) that grows on rye grass that was used by the people to make bread. Click here for MedicineNet.com article "St. Anthony's Fire -- Ergotism." The flowers in Stankard's paperweight, surrounded with buds and green leaves, are imaginary, and were inspired by the phenomena that plagued the small village.

The paperweight has a black and white "S" cane embedded in the underside of the colored background, and signed Paul J. Stankard, "A541 1979."
