MUSEUM OF GLASS
Paul Stankard: A Floating World,
Forty Years of an American Master in Glass Exhibit
On October 23, 2005, we had the pleasure of meeting Paul J. Stankard at the Museum of Glass in Tacoma, Washington. The museum hosted the "Paul Stankard: A Floating World, Forty Years of an American Master in Glass" exhibit organized and circulated by the Museum of Arts & Design, New York.

Our meeting began with lunch at the Museum's cafe. Afterward, Mr. Stankard gave us a tour of the exhibit of his early works, including detailed information on the various pieces that were on display. Mr. Stankard is more than a gifted artist, he is a charming person with a great sense of humor. The exhibit was really excellent, and the personal attention we received made it even more memorable.

Next, we had an opportunity to see Mr. Stankard as a teacher when he gave a lecture on glass art to a large gathering of glass art enthusiasts, including his friend, Dale Chihuly.

Then, we had a chance to see Mr. Stankard as a master artist when he demonstrated his glass blowing skills using the Museum's hot shop for his temporary studio. The Museum of Glass is a wonderful venue for this type of demonstration because the Amphitheater makes it possible for the audience to see what the artist is doing both directly and on high definition monitors mounted strategically around the room. At the conclusion of the demonstration, Mr. Stankard announced that he was going to auction off the paperweight that he created, and the proceeds would support the Museum of Glass and its glass blowing student program. The paperweight sold for $7,500!

We hope this Web site will serve as a valuable reference of Stankard's early works, and will grow over time. Images and descriptions on this Web site will be maintained on a permanent basis to ensure continuity.
